    In short

“Foundation: Start Your Animal Business” is an online course for dog trainers and animal professionals who want to become self-employed or get their start in order. It covers registration, positioning, your offer, pricing and your first clients in modules with worksheets. The regular price is 149 € one-time, no subscription.

    Your day

I think I know your day.

    1. You want to finally get going properly — or you've just started.

    2. Website, registration, insurance, pricing, social media: everything calling at once.

    3. And in the evening you're at your laptop instead of with your dog.

    It's not your fault.

No trainer education teaches you how to build a business: registration, pricing, offers, client acquisition. Feeling overwhelmed isn't on you — you're just missing a clear order of steps.

    A short story

Picture Jana. 29, just getting started near Zurich.

    Before

Website, Instagram, insurance, registration, pricing — everything at once, nothing finished. In the evening she's at her laptop instead of with her dog, wondering if she's even cut out for self-employment.

    What Jana changes
    • She gets a clear order: what first, what later, what not at all.
    • For the technical stuff, she gets help instead of searching for tutorials at night.
    After

Afterward, a plan hangs on her wall. And evenings are for her dog again.

Jana is a made-up character – like many trainers we know.

    Your choice, not pressure.

The Fundament gives you that order of steps. You can work through it alone — or get support when you need it.

    Away from …

    • Too many things going on at once
    • The quiet worry that it won't add up
    • Evenings at the laptop instead of with your dog

    Toward …

    • A plan hanging on your wall
    • More time with dogs, less on your phone
    • Being seen as a professional — not a hobbyist

    Honestly …

    Does this sound familiar?

You work a lot, but too little is left at the end of the month.

You're not sure who to target – so you target everyone.

You have a thousand ideas but no clear plan for where to start.

It doesn't have to stay this way.

Foundation: Start your animal business shows you how to change it.

    Your path

    Three steps to the result

No theory loops. You implement right away.

    1

    Understand

You see exactly where things are stuck for you – no jargon, with examples from the animal industry.

    2

    Implement

You apply it right away with ready-made templates. No theory overload, just step by step.

    3

    Sell

You see the result in your everyday work: more inquiries, better prices, less stress.

Michael Lederer teaching Foundation: Start your animal business

„Michael zeigt das Fundament: Vision, Zielgruppe, Angebot – die drei Säulen, auf denen jedes Tierbusiness steht.“

    Chapter 01

Paths to self-employment – your drive decides

Success doesn't happen by chance – it begins with clarity about your motivation. Two forces pull at you: toward-motivation (what draws you?) and away-from-motivation (what do you want to leave behind?). You need both.

    Toward-motivation

    • Freedom & independence – you shape your own day
    • Creative freedom – your vision without limits
    • Influence & impact – actually change something

    Away-from-motivation

    • ✗Frustration at work – the same treadmill, every day
    • ✗Lack of appreciation – talents going to waste
    • ✗Exhaustion – stress that wears you down
    • ✗Dead end – no room to grow
    S
    Sarah
    Dog trainer – toward-motivation

„After years in an office job, Sarah made her dream of running her own dog-training center a reality. The idea of being her own boss and working with dogs every day was her driving force."

    J
    Jonas
    Animal communicator – away-from-motivation

„Jonas felt trapped behind a desk while his heart belonged to animals. An article about animal communication was the final push: out of the old job, into a fulfilling self-employed career."

Workbook task: Find your motivation (15 minutes)

    1. 1What are your toward-motivations? Which dreams drive you?
    2. 2What positive experiences do you picture in your self-employment?
    3. 3What are your away-from-motivations? What bothers you right now?
    4. 4What do you absolutely want to leave behind – and why?
    5. 5How do toward- and away-from-motivation work together in your decision?
    Chapter 02

Business planning & positioning – your compass

A business without clear positioning is like a dog without a nose: it can't find the trail. In this chapter you build your business plan, analyze the market, and develop a USP that makes you unmistakable.

    V
    Vanessa
    Dog masseuse – USP example

„More than just massage: classic massage + kinesiology taping + individual fitness programs – this combination is unique in her region. Brand message: "I help your dog stay healthy, fit, and active."

    Chapter 03

Time management – the Eisenhower Matrix for animal professionals

You're a service provider, bookkeeper, marketer, and leader all at once. The biggest trap: being busy but not productive. The Eisenhower Matrix is your most important sorting tool.

    Urgent & important
    Do immediately
Sick dog · urgent tax deadline
    Important, not urgent
    Schedule deliberately
Business plan · website · continuing education
    Urgent, not important
    Delegate
    Routine emails · appointment coordination
    Neither urgent nor important
    Eliminate
    Endless social media scrolling
    Pomodoro
25 min focus → 5 min break. After 4 rounds, take a 20–30 min break.
    Time-blocking
Fixed time blocks in your calendar for clients, admin, and marketing.
    2-Minute Rule
Anything under 2 minutes: do it now. Everything else: schedule it.
    Weekly review
Friday, 30 min: What got done? What's open? Plan for next week.
    V
    Vanessa
    Dog masseuse – productivity hack

„Before the Eisenhower Matrix, Vanessa was drowning in email chaos. Since blocking Monday and Wednesday mornings for strategic tasks, her productivity has doubled. Plus: Friday 5pm to Monday 8am is sacred – no inbox, no burnout."

    Chapter 04

Financial planning – the 3 numbers you need to know

"But I'm a dog trainer, not a bookkeeper!" – Michael hears this sentence every week. But if you don't know your numbers, you lose control. Three numbers are enough to start.

    1 · Fixed costs
    What must go out?

Rent, insurance, software, phone – every month, no matter how many clients.

    2 · Break-even
    What must come in?

The minimum revenue at which all costs are covered. Your bottom line.

    3 · Target revenue
    What do you want?

Worked out backwards: how many clients × sessions × hourly rate?

    Vanessa's financial overview (example)

Dog-massage studio in its 2nd month – fixed costs broken down transparently.

    1100 €
    Fixed costs / month
    • Studio Rent
      500 €
    • Marketing
      300 €
    • Miscellaneous
      120 €
    • Insurance
      100 €
    • Software
      80 €
    Break-even at €60/hr:
    ≈ 22 sessions / month
    Target: 50 sessions = €3,000 revenue, ~€1,700 net.

Workbook task: Your personal financial plan

    1. 1What are your monthly fixed costs? List each item separately.
    2. 2What is your break-even point in euros per month?
    3. 3How many clients / sessions do you need to reach break-even?
    4. 4What profit is your goal in the first year (broken down per month)?
    5. 5Which accounting tool do you use (lexoffice, sevDesk, Excel)?
    6. 6How big is your planned 3-month liquidity buffer?
    Chapter 05

Legal & tax – clean from day 1

Cutting corners here risks warnings, fines, or in the worst case having to shut down. The good news: with a clean checklist, all of this is done in 1–2 weeks.

    Business registration
Register with your local trade office. Depending on your activity, this may be an unrestricted or regulated trade.
    Tax registration
Questionnaire from the tax office. This is where you decide on the small-business tax exemption.
    Professional liability insurance
Mandatory for most animal-related professions. Protects against damages during treatments.
    Treatment agreement
In writing: service, price, liability exclusion for pre-existing conditions.
    Terms & GDPR
Required for online bookings. Privacy policy + data processing agreement.
    Cancellation policy
Communicated clearly before booking – protects you from lost revenue.
    V
    Vanessa
    Legal roadmap

„Registered her business as a dog masseuse, applied for professional liability insurance, chose the small-business tax exemption (planned year-1 revenue under the threshold), and hired a tax advisor for the setup phase. The investment paid off already in the first tax year through tax savings."

    Chapter 06

    Marketing & sales – your 360° plan

You can be the best dog masseuse in the world – if nobody knows about you, nobody books. Here's the marketing mix Vanessa uses to win new clients every month.

Marketing mix: contribution to client acquisition (Vanessa's example)

    Instagram (3 posts/week)28% · €0
    SEO / Blog22% · €0
    Email (lead magnet)18% · €20/mo
    Meta Ads (local)17% · €250/mo
    Vet-practice partnerships10% · €0
    Local events5% · €30/event

Key takeaway: 50% of clients come through organic channels (Instagram + SEO). Paid ads are an accelerator – not the foundation.

    Workbook task: Your marketing plan

    1. 1What's your brand message in one sentence?
    2. 2Which online channels do you use, and how often do you post per week?
    3. 3What lead magnet do you offer to collect email addresses?
    4. 4Which local partners could be interesting for you?
    5. 5What's your monthly marketing budget – broken down?
    6. 6What results do you want to have achieved after 3 months?
    Chapter 07

    Networking – relationships are capital

Giving comes before taking. No business grows alone – especially not in animal professions, where trust is everything.

    • Give first: share knowledge, recommend others, offer help
    • Be visible: industry events, associations, online groups
    • Follow up: a personal message after every event
Vanessa example: 12 new clients in 3 months – without a single ad, just by answering questions in local Facebook groups.
    Chapter 08

Client retention – 5–7× cheaper than new clients

Keeping an existing client costs a fraction of acquiring a new one. Here are the levers.

    • Respond in < 24h to every inquiry
    • Health record for every animal (digital)
    • Follow-up message 2–3 days after the appointment
    • Loyalty program starting with the 5th booking
Vanessa example: A handwritten postcard after the first treatment = 2 minutes of effort → 5 direct referrals.
    Chapter 09
    Scaling
Scaling is not the same as growing. Online courses, group sessions, first employees, franchising – the paths to moving beyond the hourly-rate model.
    Chapter 10
    Risk management
Set aside 30% of your income in a separate account: 20% tax, 10% emergency fund. Plus: plan ahead for illness, revenue drops, or losing a key client.
    Chapter 11
    Team leadership
Selection with a trial workday, a collaborative leadership style, weekly meetings, a feedback culture, and a 'learn and teach forward' principle for sharing knowledge.
    Chapter 12
    Continuing education & expert status
Make your specialization visible, collect references, write expert articles. Vanessa saw a noticeable rise in bookings after a kinesiology-taping course.
    Chapter 13

Vanessa's final roadmap – the first 90 days

From the day of business registration to a stable routine. Three clear phases, each with concrete weekly goals.

    Weeks 1–4
    Setup
    • Register your business
    • Set up a business account + accounting tool
    • Take out professional liability insurance
    • Launch a website with 5 required pages + GDPR compliance
    • Google Business Profile / local directories
    Weeks 5–8
    First clients
    • Publish a lead magnet (e.g. a dog fitness check)
    • Visit the first 10 vet practices + leave a business card
    • Instagram plan: 3 posts/week (Vanessa's template)
    • First 5 clients at 50% price as references
    • Set up your first referral agreement
    Weeks 9–12
    Stabilize
    • Establish a fixed weekly rhythm based on the Eisenhower Matrix
    • Build a liquidity cockpit (3-month buffer)
    • Launch a loyalty program (5th booking = bonus)
    • Test a first scaling idea (group sessions / online)
    • Quarterly review + plan for next quarter
    Bonus

    Questions

    Frequently asked questions

Does the course work equally well for AT, DE and CH?

Yes. Legal forms, registration, taxes and funding are covered in dedicated lessons for Austria, Germany and Switzerland – including authority checklists.

I'm already self-employed – is the course still worth it?

If you've been self-employed for under 12 months: definitely, you'll close typical gaps. If you've been established longer and are already well set up, look instead at 'Business Diagnosis' or 'Referral Machine'.

Do I get a finished business plan?

You get a 10-page template to fill in that banks and funding bodies genuinely accept – plus Excel templates for financial and hourly-rate planning.

What's the difference between the workbook and accompaniment?

With the workbook you implement on your own. With accompaniment we work on it together in sessions, and on request we can implement it completely for you. We work out which way fits in the intro call.

What happens in the intro call?

30 minutes, free and no obligation. You tell us where you stand, we look at what you really need – sometimes that's just the workbook. Michael gets back to you within one business day with a suggested time.
